SANTA FE — Home matches have been a rarity of late for Robertson and West Las Vegas tennis teams, and this past weekend’s pre-district tournaments — technically a Las Vegas event on the calendar — were no exception.
District teams gathered on the campus of Capital High School, which has a dozen courts (double that of the RHS campus), in order to sort out seeding for the district tournaments.
The trip didn’t hurt the Meadow City contingent, anyway. Robertson flat out dominated, securing the No. 1 seeds for boys’ singles (David Romero), boys’ doubles (Marcos Gallegos and Michael Salas), girls’ singles (Juliana Guerin) and girls’ doubles (Jaci and Jenese Fulgenzi). West Las Vegas’ Giovanna Nava started strong and finished the same way, clinching the No. 3 seed in girls’ singles.
This past weekend’s showing sets the table for the first major test of the postseason, to take place this coming Friday and Saturday in another road trip for the Las Vegans. Taos hosts the district tournaments, with matches beginning at 9 a.m. each day.
The top four from district earn trips to the Class 1A-3A state tennis tournaments the following week in Albuquerque.
Highlights from Saturday’s pre-district competition:
David Romero, Robertson, defeated Jacob Romero, Monte del Sol, 6-1, 6-0. He then won a semifinal over teammate Daniel Hosch, 6-0, 6-0. In the final, he beat Rafael Garcia of Monte del Sol, 6-3, 6-1.
Hosch came back from an opening-set loss to ground D.J. Bird of Raton, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3. After falling to teammate Romero, he lost against Marcus Hoefer-Curl of Taos, 6-3, 6-2, to finish in fourth place.
West Las Vegas’ Noah Gallegos took a default win over Santa Fe Waldorf, then lost to Garcia, 6-0, 6-0.
Gallegos and Salas skipped past their scheduled first-round match when Santa Fe Waldorf defaulted. That put them into a semifinal encounter with fellow Robertson combo Jay Patel and Ali Shabaneh, which they won 6-0, 6-2. In the final, Gallegos and Salas dismissed Nathan Wooldridge and Galen MacLennan of Taos, 6-1, 6-3.
Patel and Shabaneh began their day by beating Miguel Tarango and Arturo Jessen of Monte del Sol, 6-2, 6-2. After the loss to Gallegos and Salas in the semis, they fell to Taos’ Eli Collignon and Dylan Cox 6-3, 6-3, in the third-place match.
Guerin, a defending state champion for the Lady Cardinals, shut out Brittany Fleming of Raton, 6-0, 6-0, in a morning contest. She was nearly as overpowering in a semifinal win against Ila Medina of Raton, 6-1, 6-0. And in the final, she outgunned athletic Mikala Vertovec of Raton, 6-1, 6-3.
Nava took down Maggie Maestas of Taos, 6-1 and 6-2, to reach the semifinals, where Vertovec prevailed, 6-2, 6-1. But in the third-place contest, the West Las Vegas standout bounced back for a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Medina.
Alicia Arguello of Robertson lost to Medina by a 6-4, 6-2, count in another morning matchup.
Jaci and Jenese Fulgenzi, who have starred in both singles and doubles this spring, teamed to win the pre-district bracket. First they took a straight-sets decision over West Las Vegas’ Michelle Martinez and Angelica Lopez, 6-0, 6-0.
Then they dropped Sarah Valdez and Ashley Hester of Raton, 6-1, 6-0. In the final, they handled Maya Olonia and Aquene Reid of Taos, 6-2, 6-0.
Another RHS pair, Hannah Montoya and Jenice Romero, defeated Alee Bird and Autumn Archuleta of Raton, 6-0, 6-0, before falling to Olonia and Reid, 6-2, 6-2.
Lady Cards Morgan Hosch and Kimmeah Martinez beat Cassandra Cervantes and Maribella Duran from West Las Vegas, 6-0, 6-0, then lost to Olonia and Reid in a tough one, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
