Dual championship victories for the home teams were the order of the day Saturday in the Robertson Tennis Invitational.
It’s the second tournament win in as many weekends for coach Juan Carlos Fulgenzi’s Cardinals, who also won in Carlsbad.
The RHS Invite included teams from Belen, Portales, Raton and Sandia Prep as well as Robertson. West Las Vegas usually participates but is not fielding a team this year.
RHS girls’ coach Randy Garcia credited strong performances across the board from his young Lady Cardinals, who’d placed third in the Carlsbad Invitational.
“On Saturday there were some key wins to win the tournament,” he said. “Juliana Guerin had a big win over last year’s Class 3A singles champion (Sandia Prep’s Chelsea Lehman) 6-2, 6-7, 10-4 tiebreaker, while Miranda Garcia made short time with Prep’s Hannah Tennent, winning 6-1, 6-3.”
Robertson’s Giavanna LaFerriere won what Garcia called “a key and decisive match” over Sandia Prep’s LIz Stebbins to secure the team title.
In girls’ doubles, the teams of Victoria Urrutia and Victoria Gomez and Victoria Giron and Dominque Rivera had a significant role as well. “(They) played a big part this weekend with continued progress at each tournament,” said Garcia.
“It’s nice to win our tournament; we definitely have the respect of a lot of teams.”
Fulgenzi’s boys played shorthanded to pull out the win. Emilio Gomez, David Romero and Marcus Alcaraz manned the top three singles’ spots, while Nick Newman and Lucas Vigil and the new pairing of Kenny Arguello and Charlie Linder played pairs.
“It was a good opportunity for our top three to show leadership,” Fulgenzi said, “and for our young guys to get experience. I was pleased; they fought well.”
Both teams play in the Mayfield tournament this Friday and Saturday in Las Cruces.
