Nine Cardinal wrestlers won individual District 2 (1A-3A) championships Saturday at Gillie Lopez Gym, ushering Robertson to a team title and assuring everyone on board individual qualification for state.

Rico Montoya (103), Charlie Armijo (119), James Gonzales (125), Jeremy Valdez (135), Johnathan Lucero (140), Troy Estrada (145), Daniel Martinez (160), Gabriel Lovato (215) and Sam Marquez (heavyweight) all took first place for coach Richard Martinez’s Redbirds. Additionally, three RHS wrestlers were runners-up and two others placed third.

Jayvis Medrano (171) won a hard-fought tournament finale against Robertson’s John Pino and was West Las Vegas’ lone district champion. The host Dons, who advanced to a total of four individual title matches, finished third as a team behind Tucumcari.

Fourth-place Pecos won no titles but put four grapplers in the finals and will send seven to state. Taos was fifth and won two weight classes.
