Strength in distance running events paved the way to runner-up finishes for both the Robertson girls and West Las Vegas boys in this past Thursday’s Meadow City Invitational.

The Lady Cardinals, paced by Anabella Miller in the long runs, garnered 72 team points to fend off West Las Vegas (67) and Fort Sumner (62) for second place in the girls’ team competition.

Meanwhile, the Dons got their usual boost from Moises Coca and another strong showing in the boys’ distance events to amass 71 points, outscoring third-place Pojoaque Valley (64.5).

St. Michael’s swept the team titles, posting 123.5 points on the boys’ side and 120 on the girls’.

Seven full teams took part in the meet, although Wagon Mound had a couple of entrants, notably in the jumps.

West’s boys won in the javelin (Mauricio Castillo), long jump (Stephen Urioste) and 3,200-meter run (Coca), and Coca was second only to Pojoaque star Jereme Santistevan in the other two distance events, the 800 and 1,600.

Lady Cardinals took titles in discus (Angelica Montoya), 1,600 (Miller) and 400 (Morgan Diefendorf).

Jenika Padilla (long jump), Joedy Quintana (100, 200), and Louanna Valencia (300 hurdles) won to help get the Lady Dons in the top three as a team. West won the 400 and 1,600 relays.
