As usual, the Pojoaque Elkettes brought their defense-first mentality to Las Vegas on Wednesday afternoon.
As usual, the Robertson Lady Cardinals were ready.
RHS scored both goals in the first half and held on for a 2-0 win in district girls’ soccer action. The Lady Cards improved to 11-6 overall and 2-0 in district with three matches left. They play at perennial state title hopeful Santa Fe Prep on Friday, then close with road matches next week at district foes Pojoaque and Moreno Valley.
On Wednesday, the Elkettes again placed extra help in the backfield to stifle the Robertson offense, and keeper Bianca Saunders was effective.
But the Lady Cards scored twice within a two-minute stretch midway through the first half. Both shots were created after strong drives in the zone by RHS drew Saunders too far out. Ariana Trujillo scored first, and then Desiree Martinez pushed one in roughly a minute and a half later.
A third goal, shot by Amy King with five minutes left, was negated by an offsides penalty.
RHS keeper Taria Clayton had a solid match, the highlight of which was stopping two good shots, including a direct kick, by Stevirae Terrazas.
