For the first time in at least recent history, Robertson is a dual champion in District 2-3A track and field.

The Cardinals, coached by Mike Boyle, and Lady Cardinals, coached by Benny Ortiz, earned that distinction Saturday at St. Michael’s, edging the home team for the titles.

In the process, RHS gained several new individual qualifiers for the state meet, to be held Friday and Saturday at the UNM track complex.

For the boys’ team, Micah Segura placed second in the discus (117-0); Brian Maestas was second in the 3,200-meter run (10:45.4); John Pino took second in the triple jump (36-11); and Clint Brayfield was second in the 400-meter dash (52.65). All joined an already strong list of local qualifiers.

Topping the list are the likes of Estevan Vigil and Daniel Martinez. “Estevan and Daniel are our usual standouts,” Boyle said. Vigil won four of his five events and took second in javelin. In addition to his favored events, the hurdles, Martinez lent his speed to the Cardinal relay effort.

“Our relays did really well; that’s what put us up on St. Mike’s,” Boyle noted.

“We had an amazing day,” Ortiz said of his girls’ team.

New state-qualifying performances for the Lady Cards include Kristen Montaño in the 100 (12.92) and 200 (26.33); Belen Romero in the 1,600 (5:48.62), Sabrina Romero in the 100-meter hurdles (17.91) and triple jump (31-11.5), Amy King in the 300-meter hurdles (51.03), 400-meter relay team (50.99), and 800-meter relay team (1:48.94).

Robertson’s girls placed second in the Class 3A state championships a season ago; the RHS boys were third. In 2008, the Cards were second and Lady Cards third.
