San Miguel County is taking the first step toward the possibility of taking ownership of Don Gallegos Circle.
The commission voted last week to have a committee of county officials to view the road and make a recommendation to the county.
Dozens of houses are on the road, which is off of the Eight Street Extension. Residents presented a petition last year asking the county for help with the road.
In a letter last year to the petition organizer, County Manager Les Montoya responded that the County Commission had directed him to cooperate with Don Gallegos residents to address safety issues.
He stated that the commission authorized him to provide equipment and an employee to grade the street. But he said the residents should provide the materials to be applied on the street. The offer of help was done on a onetime basis.
Parts of the road are in the city limits and others aren’t.
The county is shy about accepting new roads into its system. As it stands, the county already maintains hundreds of miles of roads.
