• The Miss Las Vegas Scholarship Organization is looking for baby girls and baby boys ages six months to five years to compete in the 3rd Annual Baby Miss Las Vegas and Baby Mister Las Vegas Pageant. The pageant is scheduled for Sunday June 5. The contestants will be judged by a panel of judges on beauty and personality in Party/Formal Wear. The contestant with the highest judge’s score will be awarded Baby Miss and Baby Mister Las Vegas. Entry forms may be picked up at the Las Vegas San Miguel Chamber of Commerce or the Abe Montoya Recreation Center. Entry Deadline is Friday, May 6. • “The Diagnosis and Treatment of Localized Prostate Cancer” panel discussion will be held at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 7 in the UNM Cancer Center Auditorium, located at 1201 Camino de Salud NE, Albuquerque. Doors open at 7:30 a.m.; the program runs from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. There will be a break mid-morning. The Prostate Cancer Support Association of New Mexico and the UNM Cancer Center invite the public to attend a free panel discussion. UNM Cancer Center physicians Dr. Mike Davis, a urologic/transplant surgeon and urologic oncologist, Dr. Thomas Schroeder, a radiation oncologist, and Dr. Steven Eberhardt, a radiologist, will discuss the methods used to determine the presence and extent of a patient’s prostate cancer. Drs. Davis, Schroeder and Eberhardt will also describe current treatments, emphasizing those available in New Mexico, and provide highlights of treatments still under development. • The Las Vegas Elks Lodge #408 will be holding a Mother's Day Breakfast from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 8. Mothers Eat free and others $5 a plate. Event will be held at 2305 Collins Drive
• Children's Art Show and fundraiser at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 8 at First Baptist Church on Mountain View Drive. Money will be donated to the Children's Church program to pay for summer camps and help sponsor a child from Tanzania through Compassion International. All the artwork will be original pieces created by children ages 3-12 years old. There will be works of art that include, painting, collage, photography, and drawings. • The 2011 Michael William Marr Annual Scholarship will be awarded at the Las Vegas Robertson High School Senior Awards Night Ceremony. Applications must be post-marked no later than May 10. Applications are available from the counselors at Robertson High School. The scholarship has been awarded annually for the past 29 years. Donations to the Marr Scholarship are always accepted and can be made at the Community First Bank in Las Vegas.

• International Migratory Bird Day Celebration at Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge on Sunday, May 15. Visitor Center Open from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Located on Highway 281, East of Las Vegas: 1 p.m. “Happy Birthday Rachel Carson” by Ranger Chris Ranger Chris will tell the story of scientist and writer Rachel Carson and her role as one of the world’s foremost leaders in the conservation of migratory birds.
