• Museum Cafe Series - The Long Road to Statehood, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28 at the City Museum. Rick Hendricks, state historian, will talk about the 62-year effort leading to statehood. Issues involved in the struggle included the Civil War, bigotry, Texas expansionism, and dysfunctional politics. A participatory discussion will follow the presentation.

• The Fourth Annual Literacy Fair, 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Abe Montoya Recreation Center. This year’s theme is “Reach for the Stars: Read, Read, Read.” The event is free and all ages are welcome.

• El Creston MDWCA special board meeting, 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28 at the First Presbyterian Church. Discussion on joining fee, an annual member assessment and a rate structure for water service for residents are on the agenda. The meeting is open to the public.

• Knights of Columbus, Council #804 Free Throw Championship, registration starts at 11:30 a.m. with competition starting at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29 at the West Las Vegas High School Gymnasium. Open to all boys and girls ages 10 to 14. Age eligibility is determined by the age of the contestant as of Jan. 1 and a proof of age is required. • Sweetheart Dance: Stepping Back in Time, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11 at NMHU’s Sala de Madrid. • NMHU Wearable Art Show - New Mexico Skies, 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the NMHU Student Center Ballroom. Tickets are $10 single and $15 for a couple and the night of the event are $15 student and $20 for the  public. This is a benefit fundraiser for the NMHU Crossroads Art Club. Tickets available at Traveler’s Cafe and NMHU Burris Hall.

• The Eagles is having a Indoor Swap Meet/Arts and Crafts Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, 211 South Grand. Table Rental available, contact Sandra 429-8937 for more information.

• Catholic Daughters Court #1796 (Immaculate Conception Church) is sponsoring the 2012 Education Contest, open to Catholic and non-Catholic students in grades 4 through 12 and Catholic Daughter members. The themes for this year are: “Planting Seeds of Faith” or “Inspiring Others to Grow.” Monetary awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place entries in each division and category at the local, state and national level. Top winners will advance to state competition and top state winners to nationals. Local contest deadline is Feb. 15. Go by the Immaculate Conception parish at 813 Sixth St. Call Sandra at 454-8203.
