• Operation Christmas Child Collections, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16 at the local Wal-Mart. Worldwide Christmas Project to Collect Shoe Box Gifts for Hurting Children Through Operation Christmas Child, locals are joining people across the U.S. to fill empty shoe boxes with toys, school supplies and necessity items for impoverished children around the world. • A Time to Bead in New Mexico and Cancer Assistance and Support will be at the People’s Faire, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15. • The New Mexico Land Grant Consejo meeting, 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17 at the Cleveland Center on State Road 518 (formally the Mora Valley Clinic). • The New Mexico Public Defender Commission will hold its second meeting at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22 at the State Bar Center 5121 Masthead NE, Albuquerque. The Commission was created in 2012 by constitutional amendment to provide independent oversight of the New Mexico Public Defender Department that had previously been controlled by the governor. • West Las Vegas Head Start program is accepting applications for income eligible 3- and 4-year-old children for the 2013-14 school year. The program has seven classrooms at the West Las Vegas site and is in session from 7:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Monday through Friday. The program also has three classrooms at Los Ninos Elementary.
