Power Picks season gets started

Predict winners and vie for the league title

By The Staff

Today (10 p.m. Wednesday) is the deadline for readers like you to submit the first week’s worth of predictions in the Optic’s annual Power Picks football competition.

Optic Power Picks gives readers the chance to show off their gridiron expertise. Participants will submit to the newspaper a list of their predicted winners each week, beginning with this coming weekend’s National Football League games, along with the college football games of the University of New Mexico Lobos and New Mexico State University Aggies, and continuing through the Super Bowl in February 2011.

It’s free to play, and participants have a chance to win prizes provided by the Optic and sponsors.

Accuracy counts, but so does consistency in submitting picks every week. Season championships are determined by the total number of correct picks to your credit over the course of our season.

The Optic will continue to welcome new participants as late as the playoffs, but it’s important to get in on the contest early if you covet the glory of the Power Picks season championship.

While the Optic sports section has showcased an NFL picks segment off and on over the years, this is the third year the paper has opened the picks to reader participation. It’s been an interesting competition all the way. In the inaugural season, Geraldine Chavez edged Josh Garcia to claim the title. Then last year, it was Justin Rice holding off Martin Duran to take the bragging rights as Power Picks champ.

To join the fun, all you have to do is submit your e-mail address, along with your contact information (full name, telephone number and favorite NFL team) to The Commish:

(Note: We will not publish your phone number, but will only use it if we need to contact you.)

Once we have your e-mail address on file, we will e-mail you a list of the coming week’s NFL, UNM and NMSU games each weekend. You’ll have until 10 p.m. each Tuesday (note day change) to e-mail your list of winners. Each Friday, the Optic will feature selected predictions and a leaderboard of our top pickers. (Deadlines will be enforced in order to meet our publication deadlines.) Join the fun now!
