A man who witnesses say ran out into traffic on Seventh Street near Dalbey Drive was struck and killed by a sports utility vehicle at about 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Leroy Vigil, 45, died at the scene, Las Vegas Police Chief Christian Montaño said.

The driver of the sports utility vehicle, 20-year-old Kimberly Mares, was transported to Alta Vista Regional Hospital by ambulance. She was treated and released.

Seventh Street was closed for several hours Wednesday as police investigated the fatal accident. The chief said the investigation is still ongoing. Mares consented to a blood draw, but there is no indication that she was intoxicated, he said. Investigators are asking for a toxicology report on Vigil.

According to Montaño:

Witnesses told police that Vigil suddenly ran into traffic. Mares was traveling south on Seventh Street when she struck Vigil.

Her vehicle ended up in the field behind the Lutheran church.

Police were called to the scene around 8 p.m.
