Harry S. Truman once said, “I never did give them hell. I just told the truth, and they thought it was hell.” That might apply to Las Vegas Mayor Alfonso Ortiz’s declaration that the city may have to jack up its water rates to pay for the necessities of its system.
Here are some hard truths:
• We’re too dependent on the Gallinas River for our water, drawing about 90 percent of our supply from that small and overused waterway. Plus, our primary backup, Taylor Wells, pulls water away from many of the city’s neighbors south of town.
