Will this really be Cindy Roybal’s swan song after a Hall of Fame coaching career?
Roybal, who once guided New Mexico Highlands women’s basketball to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference West championships, will be coaching the North girls in the annual Class 2A-3A North-South All-Star game on Friday night.
Roybal recently announced her plan to step down from head coaching duties at Santa Fe Indian School, which she led to two state titles.
Another name of interest to local hoops fans, Mora head coach James Branch, will mentor the North boys’ basketball team.
North-South week in Las Vegas got rolling on Monday with the arrival of athletes on the host campus of NMHU.
A week of activities culminates with the all-star girls’ and boys’ basketball games (6 p.m. Friday at the Wilson Complex) and football game (6:30 Saturday at Perkins Stadium).
Eight Las Vegas-area athletes are among the featured North All-Stars.
Mora’s Chantel Rivera and West Las Vegas’ Michelle Tapia will play for Roybal’s squad.
Pecos’ Aaron Lujan and Johnny Vigil will join Robertson’s Joseph Mascareñas and Ryan Tafoya in playing for Branch’s North boys.
And in football, Robertson’s Santiago Aragon and Devin Chavez will take the field for St. Mike’s coach Joey Fernandez and the North. See Friday’s Optic for more on the games.
The week’s events are coordinated by Connie Trujillo and a team of volunteers.
