West Las Vegas head baseball coach Dean Gallegos will lead the North All-Stars — which include three players from the Meadow City — in this weekend’s Class 3A North-South game in Socorro.

Michael Armijo and Jared Gallegos of WLV and Adrian Jaramillo of Robertson highlight the players chosen for the North. Gallegos, also an All-State honoree, pitched and played outfield for the Dons; Armijo was an infielder. Jaramillo played a couple of positions for the Cardinals.

A kids’ baseball clinic, home run derby and “skills challenge” was slated for Thursday evening. Game one is 6 p.m. Friday; games two and three are set for 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, all at the Socorro High baseball field.

Meanwhile, the small-school (Class 1A through 3A) North-South All-Star softball events are taking place Friday through Sunday at Tom Powers Field on the Cobre campus in Bayard.

Robertson’s Kristen Lucero, West Las Vegas’ Amber Lucero and Kris Padilla and Pecos’ Geneva Rivera (a former Lady Don) have been picked for the North squad.

Following a home run derby and “golden arm contest” at 3 p.m. Saturday, games one and two will follow at around 5. Game three will be 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Note: Las Vegas will be hosting the Class 3A North-South football and basketball events in early July.
