GOLDEN, Colo. — The 20th ranked Colorado School of Mines women’s soccer team posted its first win in conference play this season defeating New Mexico Highlands 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at the CSM Soccer Stadium.
Kayla Mitchell gave CSM a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute as she controlled a ball in the box and beat a Highlands defender to score.
Megan Woodworth scored her second goal of the season in the 32nd minute. A ball was played into the box by Mines and NMHU attempted to clear the ball but Woodworth was able to deflect the clearance and control the ball to score.
CSM increased its lead to 3-0 when Erin Onat played a long through-ball to the feet of Kim Lockard for Lockard’s first goal of the season.
Mines added two more goals in the second half, both by Mitchell. In the 62nd minute, Ashley Wagener found time on the right side of the box and waited for Mitchell to make her run. Wagener found Mitchell’s feet just inside the top of the box, allowing Mitchell to score.
Erin Onat notched her second assist of the match when she found open space and wide open Mitchell on the right side. Onat played the ball out to Mitchell and she dribbled in beating the keeper. The goal was Mitchell’s sixth of the season.
Mines’ defense kept the Cowgirls away from the goal as NMHU recorded two shots in the match. Briana Schulze and Penny Rogers helped preserve the shutout.
