If it’s true that Friday night’s Pecos-Laguna-Acoma matchup was a preview of the Class 2A boys’ state championship, the Panthers have some work ahead between now and March.
Laguna-Acoma (14-1), which entered the weekend ranked No. 2 in the classification, dictated the tempo and held on to beat No. 1 Pecos 73-68 in front of a capacity crowd at Sanchez Gym.
The visiting Hawks were hot to start, pushing the ball inside and taking a 24-12 lead. Laguna led 43-23 early in the third.
But the Panthers rallied to get within single digits and trailed just 58-52 at the end of the third quarter.
Pecos suffered only its second loss of the season in falling to 12-2. Russ Gilmore’s squad dropped its opener at Bosque back on Dec. 4, then won 12 in a row going into Friday night.
Laguna-Acoma’s girls also beat Pecos on Friday 70-37.
