NMHU wrestlers go winless at Western State

Points, much less victories, were difficult to come by for the New Mexico Highlands wrestling team in its trip to Gunnison, Colo., on Tuesday night.

The host Western State Colorado swept all 10 weight classes in the final dual meet of the season to take a 38-0 win.

Four matches almost went the Cowboys’ way, and NMHU heavyweight Robert Rockhill took Kyle Graulus to overtime before losing via sudden victory, 2-1.

Weight by weight:
125 lbs.) Dustin Stiegemeyer, WSCU, defeated Erick Rangel, NMHU, 6-0.
133) C.J. York, WSCU, pinned Austin Morrow, NMHU, in 4:23.
141) Corbin Bennetts, WSCU, shut out Dan Gaylor, NMHU, 7-0.
149) Brandon Montoya, WSCU, took a win via forfeit.
157) Cody Cole, WSCU, scored a major decision, 14-5, over Manuel Sedillo, NMHU.
165) Austin Harris, WSCU, edged Travis Saxon, NMHU, in a 3-2 thriller.
174) Elliot Copeland, WSCU, won by major decision, 12-4, against Easton Hargrave, NMHU.
184) Kyle Piatt, WSCU, carved out a close 3-1 verdict over Igor Gomzin, NMHU.
197) Samuel Mangum, WSCU, doubled up Justin Rockhill, NMHU, by a 4-2 count.
285) Kyle Graulus, WSCU, won 2-1 in sudden victory over Robert Rockhill, NMHU.

Next up is the RMAC-Region IV Championships Feb. 22-23 at Chadron State in Chadron, Neb.

Robertson, West Las Vegas and Pecos high school wrestling teams will be in Taos on Saturday for the district tournament.

Matches begin around 8 a.m.

District tournaments around the state are a precursor to the state tourney Feb. 22-23 at Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.
