Defense set up offense aplenty on Sunday as the New Mexico Highlands men’s basketball team throttled Virginia-Lynchburg 97-63 before a sparse but spirited crowd at the Wilson Complex.
The Cowboys repeatedly used heads-up defense to force turnovers and score in transition, contributing to a 52 percent field goal accuracy in the team’s second win of the preseason.
Erick Vega paced the scoring output with 19 points. Roland Fitch again had a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards, and Stuart Sullivan sank five threes to finish with 15 points.
“This weekend was a great weekend to work on fundamentals against some very good competition,” said Highlands head coach Joe Harge in a news release.
NMHU will play at the University of New Mexico Lobos on Monday night.
