New Mexico Highlands University is offering young area athletes several summer sports camps in which to hone their skills.

Highlands first-year head football coach Chad Roanhaus is announcing the Cowboy Junior Football Camp and the Big Man Camp. The former is described as a skills camp for youngsters 6 to 13 years old. It will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. June 2-4 on campus. Cost is $30 per child. Coaches and players in the Young American Football League are welcome to attend; instruction will be provided by the Highlands football staff.

The Big Man Camp is designed especially for prep offensive and defensive linemen and will be held June 25-28 at Perkins Stadium on campus. Cost of the camp is $175 per participant, but student-athletes from Robertson and West Las Vegas need pay only $100 each. Big Man campers will be taught by NMHU line coaches John Roanhaus and Frank Espinoza as well as the rest of the staff. Skills to be covered will include run blocking, pass protection, footwork, hand placement and pad level (for offensive linemen); and run reads, pass rush, hand placement, line stunts and reading offense (for defensive linemen).

Big Man campers are asked to bring their own bedding, gym shorts, cleats and running shoes, swim trunks, toiletries and other personal items, and a tent if possible.

Registration forms are available from the football office and on the school Web site, nmhucowboys.com.
