Double-doubles by China Smith and Domonique Rivera and an 18-point effort by Alyssa Lopez keyed a 57-54 New Mexico Highlands win at Western New Mexico on Saturday in Silver City.

NMHU finishes 14-16 overall and 9-13 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, its best yet under coach Tiffany Darling and the best in several years.

Smith had 11 points and 10 rebounds; Rivera had 10 and 10. Whitley Coca added eight points and five assists.

The Cowgirls shot just 33 percent but outrebounded the hard-luck Mustangs (1-25) 46-35.

Western’s Larissa Loera missed what would have been a game-tying three-pointer with three seconds left.

NMHU finished tied for eighth with Western State (Colo.) but the Mountaineers got the postseason nod because of a tiebreaker.

Thomas Manzano’s second double-double of the year and a bustout performance by Mike Moody weren’t enough to keep the NMHU men from losing their regular-season finale 93-83 at WNMU (14-15, 14-8).

Manzano had 27 points and 15 rebounds, and Moody had 13 points, nine boards and three steals. Mindaugas Markevicus added 11 points.

The Cowboys (19-7, 15-7) begin the RMAC Shootout Tuesday at Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
