According to the New York Times, the State Budget Crisis Task Force issued a report earlier this week which claims, among other things, that state support for higher education in New Mexico declined by 20 percent between 2006 and 2011.

The decline was part of a fiscal crisis facing states across the nation due to such forces as rising health care costs, underfunded pensions, deferred infrastructure needs, reduced revenues, and expected federal budget cuts.

The immediate budget pressures on states, including New Mexico, are starting to ease, but the report questions how states will restore the services they have cut during the downturn.

The report, compiled by a group of respected budget experts focused on six large states, but contains data from all states.

I wonder what the delcine in  support for higher education in New Mexico has done to Highlands and Luna, and what effect it has had on our local economy.
