Mora, Pecos reach NRG final

Pecos and Mora made it a rematch in their second consecutive tournament championship, this time in the final of the boys’ Northern Rio Grande Invitational.

The Rangers handled McCurdy 74-48 on Friday behind 22 points from Cody Najar and 17 from Lorenzo Chavez.

Pecos, which blew out Coronado in the opening round, did the same to Escalante on Friday night, via an 85-40 count.

Paul C de Baca’s 20-point night led Pecos (10-1).

Mora and Pecos were to play in Saturday night’s final, one week after the Panthers crushed the Rangers 101-62 in the Tri-Cities championship game.

Meanwhile in the girls’ NRG, the Mora Rangerettes secured a spot in the final by rolling past Mesa Vista 55-45 on Friday. Gerty Herrera scored 17 and Chantel Rivera had 15 for Mora, which found itself in a 22-22 ballgame at half but outscored Mesa Vista 20-6 in the third quarter.

The Rangerettes (8-1)were to play Dulce in the final Saturday night.

Pecos’ girls advanced to the consolation final with a 51-30 win over Coronado.

Cassie C de Baca (15) and Ida Valencia (13) paced the Lady Panthers.
