The Mora Rangers gave new head coach Hank Laumbach a winning debut Saturday, defeating the Dulce Hawks 73-51 on Saturday.
The Rangers started fast, but allowed the visiting Hawks to close within five at the end of the first quarter. The Rangers regained composure, using full-court pressure to open a 38-22 lead by halftime.
Coming out of the half, the Hawks, playing aggressive, closed to within 10 points mid-way through the third quarter.
Taking the floor off a timeout, the Rangers finished the period strong with an 18-point lead at 56-38. In the fourth quarter, the Rangers sealed their home opener with tough defense and smart offense. Getting a game-high 21 points from senior point guard P.J. Pacheco and 18 from junior wing Brandon Pacheco, the Rangers cruised to a 73-51 win.
High scorers for Dulce were Dominick Panzey with 16 and Christian Cachucha with 10.
“The guys are working hard and staying focused,” said Laumbach. “We need to tweak a few things here and there, and always remind ourselves to stay humble. There’s always room for improvement. I’m proud of our team effort and glad to get the first one out of the way.” Mora hosts Cimarron on Saturday following trips to Bosque and Taos.
