Sophomore guard Andrea Romero scorched Mesa Vista’s defense for 20 points this past Saturday to lead Mora’s girls’ basketball team past the Trojans in the championship game of the Northern Rio Grande Invitational.
It’s the second straight NRG girls’ basketball title for the Rangerettes, who won in 2008 under then-head coach Mark Cassidy.
Now coached by David Salcido, Mora bounced back from an eight-point deficit early in the game and got strong contributions from several players. In addition to Romero’s game-high 20 points, the Rangerettes got 12 apiece from Monique Duran and Jessica Garcia.
With their win, Mora dealt Mesa Vista its first defeat in eight games this season.
Romero, Duran and Garcia all were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts in the three-day NRG. Joining them in receiving that distinction was Pecos’ Amber Rougmount, along with two Mesa Vista players, Crystal Martinez and Carmelita Trujillo; Escalante’s Arnisha Avalos, Coronado’s Angie Schmitz, Peñasco’s Maria Sam, Dulce’s Kaitlyn Vigil and McCurdy’s Novela Salazar.
Pecos lost to Peñasco 49-19 on Saturday to finish sixth in the tourney.
In other games, Escalate beat Coronado for third place, while Dulce defeated McCurdy to wind up seventh.
