A Cleveland, N.M., man has been charged with improperly touching a 4-year-old boy while holding him in his lap, state police said.

The 34-year-old man is facing a charge of criminal sexual contact of a minor.

According to state police, a doctor on Feb. 7 noticed that the boy shied away from him anytime he tried to touch him as part of his work. The doctor even asked the mother if the boy had had any unwanted contact while at his father’s home. The mother and father are separated.

After the doctor’s appointment, the boy was left in the care of his maternal grandmother, who tried to put an ointment on his legs, state police said. He pushed his grandmother away.

She asked the boy if anyone had touched the boy in a bad way. He identified the 34-year-old man, his baptismal godfather, as touching his crotch area, according to a police report.

The grandmother reported that the boy said his father kicked out his godfather after the boy told him what happened, the report states.

The mother found out that the boy had been sitting on the godfather’s lap while at a birthday party and that while there, the godfather hurt the boy’s genitals, police said.
