Carmela Romo Alcon was the recipient of the highest award a social worker can receive. She was awarded the 2011 Rose Hubbard Praisner Memorial award for outstanding work in the field of social work and community service at the 31st annual gathering of the New Mexico Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers at their February meeting taken place at Sandia Resort in Albuquerque.

Rose Hubbard Praisner was a noted pioneer in social work, and the award is given to a social worker in recognition of  work in the public sector for Children, Youth and Families Department and the protection of children.  Carmela received the award for her work in advocating for children and community service.

Alcon has served as a child protection agent for the Children Youth and Families Department for more than 21 years. She is currently county office manager for CYFD for Rio Arriba and Los Alamos counties. In accepting the award Alcon said, “I accept and dedicate this award to the child welfare workers in the state of New Mexico.”

Alcon is the daughter of Manuel and Emenencia Romo of Mora. She graduated from Mora High School in 1985. She graduated from New Mexico Highlands University earning a bachelor’s degree in social work in 1989 and a masters degree in social work in 1993. She became a licensed independent social worker in 2010.

She is married to Robert Rick Alcon, son of Manuel and Genevieve Alcon. They have no children, but she says, “I am responsible for many children.”

We are proud of yet another successful Mora resident who has gone out and made a difference in the lives of others.
