Kaitlyn Duran, daughter of Amy and Mario Duran, will be traveling on April 12 to Albuquerque to compete in the State Spelling Bee. She will be representing the Mora Schools as the No. 1 Spanish language speller of the county.

The students who participated in the spelling bee this year were enthusiastic and worked hard to learn to spell the Spanish words. Rita Sanchez, their teacher, said that they were very motivated and spent extra time practicing.

The top three in Mora were first place, Kaitlyn Duran; second place, Carlos Arellano and third place Kraystah Pacheco.

Sheriff’s office has 7 on staff

Since Mora County Sheriff Amos Espinoza came to office there have been many improvements and utilization of what needs to be done.

He hired new deputies and purchased a new police cruiser. They have been out patrolling and arresting offenders for DWI and suspended and revoked licenses. They have been out there enforcing traffic laws as well as conducting building checks.

The Mora County Sheriff’s office now has seven employees: Americk Padilla, undersheriff; Dennis Nelson, sergeant; Joey Romero, sheriff deputy; Xavier Romero, deputy explorer; Andréa Trujillo, and Louise Sanchez, telecommunications specialists.
