Four Mora Rangers scored in double figures, outrunning and outgunning the Pecos Panthers 84-45 this past weekend in the unexpectedly lopsided finale of the Tri-City Tournament held in Pecos.
The tourney final had been slated for Thursday, Dec. 30, in Santa Rosa but was moved to Saturday in Pecos, reportedly due to weather.
Tyler Martinez led all scorers with 17 points, followed by Adam Laumbach with 14 and Andrew Lesse and Lucas Serna with a dozen each for Mora (8-1).
Isidro Sena and John Vigil led Pecos (5-6) with 14 points each.
The Rangers are the No. 1 seed in this week’s annual Northern Rio Grande Tournament being hosted at Ben Lujan Gymnasium in Jacona. They’ll play the eighth seed Escalante Lobos at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Fourth-seeded Mesa Vista and fifth-seeded McCurdy open the tourney at 6 p.m.
Then on Thursday sixth-seeded Pecos meets third-seeded Coronado at 6 p.m., followed by second seed Dulce vs. seven seed Peñasco at 7:30.
Semifinals take place on Friday, with the tournament wrapping on Saturday.
