Mora’s Chavez hunts a trifecta

State events in track, tennis, baseball, softball under way

By Dave Kavanaugh

Finding motivation to run hard hasn’t always been simple this season for Mora’s Alonzo Chavez.

Chavez has dominated the distance events, and in the absence of close rivals, he’s found himself alone in the front of the pack more often than not.

This weekend, however, there is a clear motivation — the possibility of a sweep in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 at the Class 1A-2A state track and field championships. UNM’s track complex plays host to the small-school state meet Friday and Saturday.

Leading the way for Pecos is an athlete with state championship credentials herself, Cassandra C de Baca, who’ll be vying for titles in the distance events.

State tennis tournaments are under way in Albuquerque. As of press time, defending state singles champ Juliana Guerin, the girls’ doubles pair of Jaci Fulgenzi and Erika Baca and two boys’ doubles duos, David Romero and Amadeo Lopez plus Michael Salas and Marcos Gallegos, were all in contention for Robertson.

Both RHS boys and girls’ teams are in the mix for the team brackets; finals are Saturday at the Cline Complex.

Playing in best-of-three first-round series in Class 3A baseball are No. 4 seed Robertson (hosting Shiprock) and West Las Vegas (visiting Sandia Prep).

A No. 5 seed in the Class 3A softball fray, West Las Vegas softball hosts Santa Fe Indian while Robertson journeys to Lovington.

Notes: In first-round state tennis tournament action Wednesday evening, the Robertson boys’ doubles team of Salas and Gallegos won to advance to the quarterfinals. Nick Newman lost in boys’ singles, and the duo of Vanessa Chung and Kimmeah Martinez lost in girls’ doubles. Girls’ singles No. 2 seed Guerin, girls’ doubles No. 3 seed Fulgenzi and Baca and boys’ doubles No. 2 seed Romero and Lopez all had byes into the quarters. (See Monday’s Optic for coverage.)

Pecos’ baseball team carved out a 3-2 win over New Mexico Military on Wednesday in the first round of the Class 2A state tourney. The Panthers play Cobre in a quarterfinal 1 p.m. Wednesday at Rio Rancho’s Cleveland High.

State golf tournament qualifiers include Robertson’s Grant Gregory and West Las Vegas’ Jayme and Joedy Quintana. The meet begins Monday in Socorro.
