The Literacy Council of Northeastern New Mexico, a division of the Las Vegas Arts Council, recently hosted the fifth annual Literacy Fair at the Abe Montoya Recreation Center.
The theme was “Let Your Imagination Soar — Read, Read, Read.” Contributing to the success of the event were the following participants: Las Vegas City Schools, West Las Vegas Schools, Luna Community College, New Mexico Highlands University, Carnegie Library and NEREC.
Also contributing to promoting literacy were the following local organizations: Bikes for Books, a project of the New Mexico Masons; Elks Drug Prevention, First Born, Kiwanis and Rough Riders Museum. In addition, the Las Vegas Lions Club provided valuable eye-screening and Rainbow Road Therapy offered information on testing.
Local supporters, whose contributions were greatly appreciated, include Community First Bank, Southwest Capital Bank, Semilla Natural Foods and Tome on the Range.
Thanks to KFUN/KLVF and to the Las Vegas Optic for providing valuable pre-fair and post-fair publicity for this event. A special thanks goes to the Robertson High School FFA members for their invaluable help.
Despite the inclement weather, this community event attracted over 200 area residents.
Children of all ages took part in creative activities and received free books and snacks. The general consensus is that this event was truly the best Literacy Fair to date.
