The 18th annual Fiesta de la Hispanidad took place on March 9 in Ilfeld Auditorium to a sold-out crowd despite the wintery weather. In my estimation, it was, as in years past, a tremendous success, thanks to each of the performers who were applauded by a respectful and appreciative audience. Once again, we were all treated to the talent, passion and effort invested by each performer.
Without a doubt, the FDLH is a showing of unselfish volunteerism on behalf of each participant. Approximately 75 individuals performed investing approximately nine hours each for a total of around 675 community volunteer hours. This is why words fall short to express my abundant thanks to each performer.
Special thanks are extended to those who attended. It is because of your $4 admission to view our outstanding entertainers that the FDLH deposited $1,750 into the NMHU Foundation for scholarships.
Promoting this event would be impossible if it weren’t for the Baca family at KFUN/KLVF and the Martínez family and staff at KNMX/KMDZ/KBQL for the more than generous free air time offered each year along with PSAs that ran consistently for several weeks. Being able to drop in at a moment´s notice and be treated warmly was appreciated. Mil gracias, also, to the Las Vegas Optic for your whole-hearted support and to Margaret McKinney, NMHU Public Relations press writer, for the additional coverage.
Thanks to our two sponsors, NMHU President Jim Fries and the Litherlands/Community 1st Bank, door prizes and refreshments were purchased. The FDLH is grateful for your unwavering financial backing.
This year, thanks to Preston Garza, the following local merchants donated amazing prizes and gift certificates: Advanced Skin, Hair & Body, L´Esperance Dairy Queen, Love Music, Lowe´s Grocery Store, Sears, The Music Album, The Tint Shop, and Walmart. As in the past, nearby neighbor Buffalo Thunder Hilton Resort donated a two night stay. Mil gracias for your generosity in supporting la FDLH.
To Elizabeth Esquibel, Julia Lucero and the NMHU School of Social Work, thank you for the beautiful flyers and programs. To my new friend, Jennifer Archuleta, gracias for decorating and carrying everything into Ilfeld.
To all the lobby helpers, dear friends Ray Trujillo, Dolores Ortega and students, Jennifer and husband Ricky, thank you for ushering and serving the refreshments. To John Luján and family, mil gracias for making your instruments available to the other performers. To NMHU Chief of Police Donato Sena, a big thank you for your watchful eye. To Beverly Ortega, Stephen García, Latina and Domingo Madrid, muchas gracias for your support and varied help. Final thanks are sent to Donna Martínez and the professional Ilfeld Auditorium crew who facilitated the entire FDLH.
