Mesa State College racked up 319 rushing yards on 43 carries — an average of 7.4 yards a carry — in a 51-7 beating of New Mexico Highlands on a rainy Saturday at Perkins Stadium.
It was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference football opener for both teams. Mesa is 1-2 overall; Highlands 0-3.
Joey Applehans did much of the damage for the Mavericks, rushing 17 times for 179 yards and a touchdown. Teammate Will Halboth rushed for an additional 96 yards and a TD.
