By Dave Kavanaugh

Miranda Martinez came three rebounds shy of a quadruple-double as West Las Vegas (4-1) beat Socorro 67-54 in Class 3A girls’ basketball action Tuesday night in Socorro.

Martinez filled the stat sheet with 15 points, 15 assists, 10 steals and seven rebounds.

The game also showed West’s depth as younger players had a significant role. Cecilia Gutierrez scored a team-high 16, Alicia Cordova 12, Michelle Montaño 11. Michelle Tapia had nine rebounds for coach Jose Medina’s Lady Dons.

A fast first quarter saw the Lady Dons take a slim 15-13 lead. But West outscored its host 27-15 in an explosive second quarter to lead 42-28 at intermission. And the Lady Dons stifled the Warrior girls in the third period, holding them to three points in taking a 58-31 stranglehold on the game. That left Socorro struggling to come back in the final eight minutes.

Also Tuesday night, Robertson (1-5) almost upset Class 4A Española Valley on the road before falling 48-45.

The Lady Cardinals, coached by Aunna Bradley, led much of the contest and were ahead 37-34 with four minutes left in the game.
RHS led 21-18 at halftime.
