A 28-year old Rainsville man was killed Monday afternoon and the passenger in his vehicle was airlifted to a Santa Fe hospital following a single-vehicle accident on N.M. 442.
Lt. Robert McDonald, spokesman for state police, said an open container of alcohol was found in the vehicle, and “they’re definitely calling it alcohol related.”
Killed in the accident was Antonio Pacheco. His passenger Catalicia Barr, 29, also of Rainsville was airlifted to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe after complaining of head and back injuries, McDonald said. He added that she is expected to recover.
According to McDonald:
The accident occurred just before 3 p.m. Monday as Pacheco was headed southbound on N.M. 442 at Mile Marker 8.5 in a 1994 Chevy S10 pickup.
“For an unknown reason it left the southbound shoulder, overcorrected and rolled over approximately two times,” McDonald said. He said the vehicle came to rest on the north-bound shoulder.
The driver was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. Besides the open container of alcohol, police found personal use marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.
The rollover remains under investigation.
