A Las Vegas man died in an accident after the car he was riding in rolled over on Interstate 25 Sunday morning, state police said.

Daniel Garcia Jr., 22, of El Llano Road, was a passenger in the car, police said. He wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

The driver, Adam Ortiz, 22, of Catalina Court, declined to go to the hospital and was able to walk away, said state police Lt. Craig Martin.

Ortiz apparently lost control of his car on an icy spot on Interstate 25’s southbound lanes just south of the city, Martin said. The car rolled, and Garcia was ejected from the car, police said.

Garcia was taken to Alta Vista Regional Hospital and was going to be airlifted to a Santa Fe hospital, but he died before that could happen, state police said.

The road was mostly clear that morning, but there were icy spots, Martin said.

The state police had to deal with a couple of other accidents in the same area. One car went off the road, and another hit a guardrail. No serious injuries resulted from either of those accidents, state police said.

Garcia’s death was the second traffic fatality in recent days blamed on icy road conditions.

On Jan. 4, Valentin Montoya, 69, of the Tecolotito area, was killed when he lost control of his car on an icy U.S. Highway 84 near Tecolotito.
