A Las Vegas man was charged with attacking his girlfriend while they were passengers in a moving car, state police said.

Jerry Joe Martinez, 52, 701 Mora St., was arrested on a single count of battery against a household member. According to state police, an officer saw the two punching each other shortly after 4 p.m. Sept. 1. When the officer stopped the car, he separated Martinez and his girlfriend.

The alleged victim told officers that Martinez, her boyfriend of five years, had slapped her, state police said. Both appeared intoxicated, according to a police report.

Another passenger told officers that Martinez struck the alleged victim without provocation, the report states. However, two other occupants of the vehicle said they had no idea Martinez and his girlfriend were fighting.

State police reported that the woman had fresh cuts and scratches on the right side of her face and neck and that Martinez had blood on his left hand, an injury that he claimed happened when he cut himself at home.

Magistrate Judge Chris Najar set Martinez’s bond at $5,000 cash-only.
