In making it to two championship games and one of the best records in Class 3A, Robertson has played some riveting volleyball this season. But the decisive fifth set Tuesday night against 4A power Los Alamos may have been the most exciting finish to date.
After trailing most of that fifth game, Robertson got a spark from Kassandra Tapia and Brooke Knezevich, whose kill gave the Lady Cardinals their first lead at 14-13. Hilltopper senior Alexandra Nichols denied the win, slicing a kill to tie it, and a bad pass by RHS then made it 15-14 Los Alamos. Another Knezevich kill knotted the score before Sabrina Little retaliated and earned the third match point situation. This time, Los Alamos capitalized, with 5-11 senior Taylor Ealey blocking a Knezevich spike for the 17-15 win.
Los Alamos controlled game one 25-19, but the host Lady Cardinals began to find soft spots in the Topper defense, winning game two 25-18. RHS also took game three but lost momentum along the way. Up 17-6, the Lady Cards allowed a 9-1 run. Los Alamos blocked a Tapia attack out of bounds to close the game.
The Toppers (7-3) then rolled to a 25-12 win in game four to force the fifth set.
