New Mexico Highlands University’s Alyssa Lopez has been named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference-Baden Player of the Week after a strong performance over the past weekend’s games, both wins.
Lopez led her team to a weekend sweep in the Cowgirls’ first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games of the season. NMHU beat the Cougars of Colorado Christian University 87-83 and the Orediggers of the Colorado School of Mines 84-82.
The Cowgirls are currently riding a two-game win streak under head coach Tiffany Darling.
Lopez netted 24 points in each game and finished the weekend shooting 53.6 percent from the floor (15 of 28), 71.4 percent from three point land (5 of 8), and 76.5 percent from the free-throw line. She also pulled down 10 rebounds and dished out three assists.
Lopez’s leadership on the court this season in six games has helped put the Cowgirls in fourth place in the RMAC standings with a 2-0 record in RMAC play and 2-4 overall. Lopez is averaging 15.3 points and four rebounds. Lopez is shooting .426 from the field and .500 from behind the three-point arc.
“Alyssa has the potential to be a very special player in the RMAC,” Darling said. “Her tenacity, court awareness, and athleticism make her a very tough matchup. Alyssa is a tireless worker and one of the most coachable kids I have ever had the opportunity to work with. Her best basketball is still ahead of her.”
The Cowgirls play at Western State Colorado and Colorado Mesa (in doubleheaders with the men’s team) this weekend to continue the RMAC schedule.
