Several area athletes have been honored with selection to the 2013 Class 1A-3A North All-Stars in baseball and softball.
West Las Vegas head softball coach Lucas Griego, who just guided the Lady Dons to a runner-up finish in the state tournament, has agreed to coach the North girls, which include five from the Las Vegas area.
Joining Coach Griego will be his daughter, WLV shortstop Gabrielle Griego; Lady Dons pitcher Marissa Cordova and first baseman Amanda Garcia; Robertson infielder Ashley Jaramillo; and Mora catcher D.J. Chavez; along with 11 other honorees. Bloomfield has the most on the North squad with five players.
Seven area players were chosen to the North baseball squad. Robertson pitcher and infielder Ryan Tafoya and Cardinal teammates Miguel Jauregui, an infielder, and Miclo Allen, an outfielder and pitcher, highlight the lineup, as do West Las Vegas pitcher Pancho Caro and Pecos hurler Devin Henderson and Panthers infielders Johnny Vigil and Brandon Amaya.
North-South weekend is set for Friday and Saturday, June 7-8, and is the first of several all-star gatherings this summer break sanctioned by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association.
Unlike 2012, the Class 1A-3A North-South baseball activities won’t be held in Las Vegas. They will be held in conjunction with the softball events at Cobre in Bayard.
Last year, a committee led by then-West Las Vegas head coach Dean Gallegos brought the all-star baseball games to the New Mexico Highlands University campus. In addition to the games themselves — a best-of-three series — the activities included a home run derby, skills competition and a free clinic given for youth baseball players.
