Karen Abeyta is no stranger when it comes to veterans.
Abeyta, a West Las Vegas High School graduate, is a Navy veteran and is now serving fellow veterans as a new veterans’ service officer in Las Vegas through the state’s Department of Veterans’ Services.
“I look forward to helping veterans and their families, and bringing more services and assistance to the Las Vegas area,” Abeyta said. “I really missed working with veterans. I’m thankful to be able to be doing this once again in my hometown.”
Abeyta previously worked for the NMDVS’ Las Vegas office before moving to the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions. She is excited to be returning to what she says is her true passion.
It was this desire to return and help veterans along with an enthusiasm for working with people in general that made Abeyta stand out among the many candidates who applied for the vacant position, said Veterans’ Services Secretary Timothy Hale.
“Veterans in San Miguel and Mora counties and the surrounding areas are really going to benefit greatly from Karen’s knowledge with VA and state veterans’ benefits,” Hale said. “We’re really excited and fortunate to have her re-join our agency.”
There are nearly 3,000 veterans living in San Miguel and Mora counties.
The area native served as an engineering aide and I.T. assistant with the Navy’s Construction Battalion — a storied unit more commonly referred to as the “Seabees” — at naval bases in Spain, Guam, and locations here in the United States.
After her service, she obtained a bachelor of science degree in business administration from New Mexico Highlands University.
The NMDVS Las Vegas office is located at 917 Douglas Ave.
