David Maestas, a 2009 graduate of West Las Vegas High School and former resident of Las Vegas, was recently sworn in as vice president of Associated Students of New Mexico State University, the student government of New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.
ASNMSU, an independent entity from NMSU administration, provides services for more than 18,000 students on the NMSU main campus.
Maestas was elected in March by a vote of 1,291-754 over his opponent.
Maestas, a senior studying government and business management, has been a senator for ASNMSU since his freshman year, and has allocated more than $30,000 to 15 student organizations. He also chairs one of three senate sub-committees. He is also a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and serves on its executive committee as grand treasurer.
Maestas plans to graduate in May 2013 and is planning to attend either graduate school to obtain a master’s of business administration or enter law school.
He is the son of Dave and Suzanne Maestas of Las Vegas and has a younger brother, Nick Maestas, a junior at West Las Vegas High School.
