The Statue of Liberty
Editor’s note: The following remarks were made during last week’s City Council meeting and are being reprinted here as a letter to the editor with the writer’s permission.
Mr. Mayor, Councilors –
You’ve been working our water problems well, please maintain the focus. But today, another topic.
A few minutes ago we again pledged allegiance to the Republic, as we’ve done many times. That pledge contains a set of iconic American words. There are many other sets of iconic American words. You all know them:
”When in the course of human events…”
“Four score and seven years ago…”
“The only thing we have to fear…”
“Ask not what your country can do ...”
… and so on.
When I was about 6 or 7, I was taken to visit a great lady. I’ve been back to see her numerous times since. An inscription on the base of her statue contains another set of iconic American words, written in 1886. May I remind you that they read, in part,
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
Mr. Mayor, Councilors, while they may have been forgotten in Washington, those iconic American words have become especially relevant this summer. With the increased influx of refugees, there is a clear need and an opportunity. I wonder whether our city, Las Vegas, has the heart, the selflessness, the nerve, and the coordinating skills to welcome some of the nation’s child refugees to our City.
