Lady Dons run in top four again

Led by a pair of strong individual races from Amanda Ortzow, the West Las Vegas girls’ cross country team has cracked the top four in two straight meets to open the season.

The Lady Dons were fourth in the Sept. 5 Española Invite and matched that showing Saturday at Jemez Valley, where more than a dozen schools vied for top honors.

Ortzow, a junior, placed fourth individually both meets to pace the Lady Dons — first with a time of 20:41, then in 23:34.

Though veteran coach Leroy “Caro” Armijo’s bunch is hardly short on experience — several runners competed at state two years ago — there are no seniors on the roster, and only Ortzow and Kristen Rogers are juniors.

The West boys competed individually but did not field a full varsity at either meet.

Also Saturday, freshman Brian Maestas’ showing highlighted the Robertson boys’ cross country finish in the Taos Invitational.

Robertson will compete in the Ron Valdez Sr. Memorial Run on Saturday in Pecos, along with fellow area teams Pecos and Mora.

WLV will head to Albuquerque for a meet there.
