The Lady Dons of West Las Vegas have looked like anything but the fifth-seeded team in the District 2-3A girls’ basketball tournament.
West romped past fourth-seeded Raton 79-61 on Monday, slapped third-seeded Robertson 99-60 on Tuesday, then pulled out a 65-58 win at second-seeded Pojoaque on Wednesday.
The three consecutive road victories landed the Lady Dons in Friday night’s final along with host Taos.
West seemed determined to make an impression on state seeding committee members, playing some of its best ball of the season Tuesday in particular.
The Lady Dons caught their hosts flat-footed in the first period, going ahead 22-6. But they did even more damage in the second, scoring 31 points and grabbing a 52-33 halftime lead.
Both the frontcourt and backcourt delivered for West, creating matchup problems for the RHS defense.
The visitors narrowly missed the century mark, misfiring on their last two possessions.
It was the fourth meeting of the year for the crosstown rivals. After Robertson won in the second round of December’s Capital City Invite in Santa Fe, the two clubs split their regular district games, with each winning on the other’s home court.
