West Las Vegas swiped a season-opening win from its trip to the Jungle. The Lady Dons downed the host Lady Jaguars of Capital High 55-37 on Tuesday night at Edward Ortiz Gymnasium in Santa Fe.
Capital is a Class 4A school, and West head coach Jose “Majic” Medina said he was pleased with the effort he saw in his team’s season debut.
“The girls looked good,” said Medina. “We struggled a little bit sometimes, but it’s early. Our execution was a lot better in the second half. We’re able to extend the lead and hold a lead for the third and fourth quarters. We need to take care of the ball a little bit better, make free throws, and rebound a lot better. Overall, I was very pleased with the effort of the girls throughout the whole game. We were able to play a lot of girls and see what contributions they could all give to our team and our program, period.”
Deanna Bustos was strong on both ends of the floor, leading West with 16 points and six steals. Brianna Hidalgo scored 10 to go with seven rebounds. And Michelle Tapia posted a solid all-around game with nine points, eight boards and six steals.
The Lady Dons (1-0) face another early test with former district foe St. Michael’s coming to town on Friday. Action begins with the freshman game at 4 p.m.; it will be the West girls’ home opener at Gillie Lopez Gym.
