West Las Vegas' softball team learned its fate on Sunday afternoon: the Lady Dons are going to the state tournament as the No. 14 seed and will play No. 3 Portales in a first-round game Friday in Las Cruces.
First pitch is noon at Maag Field No. 1. The winner advances to a 6 p.m. 6 p.m. quarterfinal, playing the winner between No. 6 Miyamura and No. 11 St. Michael’s.
Quarterfinals, semifinals (11 a.m. Saturday) and the championship game (3:30 p.m. Saturday) are all set for Las Cruces’ Field of Dreams complex.
The Lady Dons (11-15 overall) got the news from longtime West Las Vegas teacher (and former coach) Richard Tripp, who was host of both the baseball and softball selection shows hosted by the New Mexico Activities Association. A live NMAA online broadcast provided the brackets to fans.
West, coached by Lucas Griego, finished the regular season on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader with Robertson.
Four teams from District 2-3A received invitations to the dance. Left out were Robertson and Santa Fe Indian.
The Class 3A state softball field includes, in descending order of seeding: Bloomfield, Raton, Portales, Cobre, Pojoaque, Miyamura, Laguna-Acoma, Lovington, Sandia Prep, Hatch Valley, St. Mike’s, Dexter, Hope Christian, West Las Vegas, Wingate and Socorro. WLV is 4-10 vs. fellow state teams.
