Miranda Martinez led all scorers with 24 points and Vanessa Lucero recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead West Las Vegas over Class 4A Capital 57-46 in a girls’ basketball season opener on Nov. 23 in Santa Fe.
“For this being our first game and having the girls together for only a week (after an extended volleyball season), it was a good test,” said WLV head coach Jose Medina. “Capital is not a bad ballclub. They have some girls who can light it up and they shoot the three-ball pretty well. We had to make adjustments at halftime to try and prevent that.”
“We were a little out of synch, a little out of shape. But it’s early, so those are things we can work on — try to get our team chemistry, our conditioning and our focus better.”
“I was proud of our girls. It was a good competitive game that tested us and showed us what we’re doing well and what we need to work on.”
Briana Montaño and Megan Martinez scored nine and seven points, respectively, for the Lady Dons. Lucero had three blocks and three steals to go with her 10 points and 10 boards. Martinez also had a full stat line with seven assists and five steals.
Notes: The Lady Dons junior varsity plays in a Clayton tournament beginning Thursday. The varsity is off until the Capital City Invite Dec. 9-11.
