Jamie Allen sank 10 of 11 free throws — including a crucial pair with 32 seconds left — and finished with 14 points to lead Robertson to a 49-43 upset of Class 3A’s third-ranked Hope Christian on Saturday night at Mike Marr Gym.
The win, which is Robertson’s second against a top three team this season, begins a welcome four-game homestand.
The Huskies did a good job drawing contact along the perimeter and got the foul line early and often. But they didn’t take full advantage of that, hitting just 17 of 29 free throws for the game (59 percent).
Led by Kasey Howington, Hope used a 7-0 run to take a 10-4 lead. The spread hit 18-8 early in the second period after a Marissa Perry layup.
Five different Lady Cardinals scored as part of Robertson’s 8-0 surge just before halftime, cutting the margin to 20-16.
Beginning with Ellie Herrera’s layup and finishing with Kendra Montoya’s fast break off a Kassandra Tapia assist, Robertson outscored Hope 17-10 in the third quarter to take a 33-30 lead.
Hope moved back in front and led 37-35 before consecutive three-pointers by Jolene Martinez and Kendra Montoya gave RHS a 41-37 edge they would not relinquish.
As a team, RHS made 14 of 20 foul shots (70 percent). The percentage would have been higher except for the last 18 seconds, during which Tapia and Allen each missed the front end of a one-and-one. Allen had all but put the win on ice at that point with two made free throws to make it a 49-41 score with 32 seconds to go.
Allen had eight rebounds and four steals to go with her team-high 14 points. Tapia scored 12 and grabbed eight boards, and Montoya had foul steals.
The Lady Cards host Pojoaque on Tuesday, then Sandia Prep on Friday.
