Diefendorfs combine for four goals in RHS season debut

Younger players led the charge Monday afternoon as Robertson girls’ soccer opened its season with a 5-0 shutout at Monte del Sol in Santa Fe.

“It was a good first game for us,” said Robertson head coach Ray Parks. “We got to play the younger players to give them experience. I’m excited about this team; we should do very well.”

A youth movement is in order for this program anyway. The team has lost several veteran players — key contributors all — to graduation this past couple of Mays. With a half-dozen seniors on the roster this year, including talented midfielder captain Elena Martinez, there will be some more big cleats to fill next year.

But Parks, aided by a good feeder program led by junior varsity coach Juan Carrillo, has been able to reload instead of rebuild nearly every fall.
Morgan Diefendorf began the scoring for the Lady Cardinals off an assist from sister Caitlin Diefendorf. The underclassmen pair accounted for the next goal as well, this time with Morgan dishing to Caitlin.

Caitlin Diefendorf scored once more before halftime, taking a pass from Shannon Sanchez and making it a 3-0 cushion.

Caitlin Diefendorf picked up a hat trick with her third goal of the afternoon, getting an assist from the veteran Martinez, as the Robertson attack resumed in the second half.

Martinez capped the scoring with a goal from an assist by another young player, Siah Trudell-Mills.

“We were much more aggressive than they were, and it affected their play,” Parks said. “We forced our style of play.”

Robertson outshot Monte del Sol 24 to 10.

Starting goalkeeper Ashley Jaramillo recorded two saves and faced five total shots, three of which were off target.

Jaramillo was relieved by Maile Hoogerhuies, who had one save and also saw five total shots.

Notes: Robertson girls’ junior varsity got off the field early on Saturday against Santa Fe’s Capital High, scoring a 10-0 victory.

The Robertson boys’ varsity, coached by Clarence Montoya, was to open its schedule Tuesday at Roswell out of Class 4A. Tuesday’s doubleheader also featuring the junior varsity was played after this issue had gone to press.

The Cardinals are scheduled to host Ruidoso at 3 p.m. Thursday on campus.

Also Thursday, the Lady Cards travel to Roswell to play Goddard, another Class 4A opponent. The RHS girls’ JV will also play that day.
